Richie Mehta is the director, creator and writer of the new show called Delhi Crime. The show is the latest addition to Netflix Indian Originals and the best one since Sacred Games. It is based on the heinous gang-rape incident of Delhi during December, 2012. The case made headlines all over the world and cemented the city’s reputation as the ‘rape capital of the world’. It follows the investigation led by Delhi Police for finding the perpetrators of the crime.
Set in the aftermath of the incident, the show is both satisfying and gut- wrenching. Delhi Crime, looks at the 2012 incident and its repercussions through the eyes of the policemen handling it. As portrayed, the Delhi police is burdened by a stained reputation. However, it didn’t go unnoticed that some elements were added in order to defend the force against further taints on its ability to protect the city. What’s ‘wow’ is the role of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, who realised that the case needed special attention and didn’t let it fall in danger with police politics. Other characters like Inspector Bhupendra Singh and IPS Neeti Singh also face quite a number of odd challenges.
The story develops while arching into various aspects like the connection between Rich and Poor, a young officer dealing with dowry issues and a father who struggles to find a groom for his daughter. It strikes a contradiction between the reality and justice. The flip side is also shown which includes the games played by the politicians and media.
The ensemble cast has worked out pretty well. Abhilasha Singh with her portrayal of ‘Nirbhaya’, leaves a strong impact. Shefali Shah’s DCP role shows apt diversity between a mother, woman and a police officer. Sandeep Bishnoi plays a brief yet crucial role as ‘Akash’ and Rajesh Tailang as the Special Task Force Officer, Bhupendra Singh had us all believing that he truly was the backbone of the investigation.
