Homosexuality isn’t something that the Indian society accepts with open arms. Same-sex relations aren’t a really comfortable
topic to debate within Indian society. As a result of the lack of audience, Indian television soaps and serials have a very insignificant and minimal representation of homosexuality. Ever since the legalization of LGBTQ, Indian cinema has started promoting it excessively.

Here is a list of characters that promotes LGBTQ community in their respective roles.

1.Ayushman Khuranna in Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan(2020)

The movie portrays a struggle of gay couple Kartik(Ayushman Khuranna) and Aman(Jeetu). They face a long and difficult road as Aman’s family is against them. His character truly signifies the struggles of the community.

2.Mairembam Ronaldo Singh in Paatal Lok(2020)

Mairembam Ronaldo Singh is Manipur based transgender. She entered the film industry with Paatal Lok playing the role of Cheeni. Cheeni’s story throws light on society’s inhuman treatment of the LGBT community.


3.Kubra Sait in Sacred Games(2018)

Kubra Sait plays the role of Kukoo a transgender woman in Sacred Games. It is probably the primary of its kind portrayal of LGBT character that Indian TV ever attempted. Her role is bold, powerful, and first of its kind.


4. Bani J in Four More Shots Please! (2019)

Bani J plays the role of Umang Singh, a bisexual trainer. The show promotes a lesbian couple and portrays how a woman is terrified to come out as a lesbian.

5.Sonam Kapoor in  Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga(2019)

Sonam Kapoor plays the role of Sweety Chaudhary. The film depicts the story of Sweety Chaudhary, a closeted lesbian. The story is about how she tries to come out to her conservative and traditional Punjabi family.


6.Manoj Bajpayee in Aligarh(2015)

A gay, linguistic professor living during a small orthodox city must affect the aftermath of a sting operation that puts his sexual orientation ahead of the whole nation. Aligarh is a biographical drama.


7. Kalki Koechlin in Margarita with a Straw(2014)

This movie portrays the Indian mindset towards bisexuality.  In this movie, She has spastic paralysis and moves to New York where she falls in love with a woman. Kalki goes through a journey of sexual discovery while finding oneself.


8. Nandita Das in Fire (1996)

Fire was way before its time. It became the primary Indian feature to explicitly portray a lesbian relationship. Fire is about two women who form an intimate relationship after they’re mistreated by their husbands. Nandita Das plays the lead role of Sita.
