Immense popularity, accessibility, and the liberty to choose from a variety of content have made Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar an easy substitute to movie theatres. However, a lot of other factors work upon giving these platforms a strategic advantage over one another. Let’s consider some of them below:
Netflix provides top-notch content ranging from numerous movies, tv shows, animes, etc for its Indian audience. The scale of available content is larger than any of its competitors. Netflix encapsulates movies made from every corner of the world and series made in several foreign countries. Adding to that, we have Netflix Originals that have gathered tremendous viewership in Indian markets. Example of that includes shows like Narcos, Stranger Things and India’s very own Sacred Games.
On the other hand, the collection of content available on Hotstar might be less, but it streams shows in almost every recognized Indian language for its viewers. Hotstar allows its viewers to watch any show airing on Star Network before its television premiere. Furthermore, Hotstar VIP allows its subscribers to enjoy live sports without missing on any update. Hence, this facility has made the platform quite popular among sports aficionados.
Amazon Prime is known for its superior streaming services along with audio and video quality. However, it is yet to match Netflix‘s finesse when it comes to quality content and Hotstar’s live streaming facilities.
The public chooses its desired streaming application based on flexibility in subscription charges. Netflix had initially started with a high tariff rate but the rise in demand made them curtail their charges. Viewers need not pay anything more than 199 INR to watch their favorite shows on a single Netflix screen for a month.
Post Disney acquiring Star Network, Hotstar has stipulated the cost of Premium services from 199 INR to 299 INR a month. However, there hasn’t been a change in its VIP plan which continues to be 365 INR annually.
On the other hand, the subscription to Amazon Prime subscription rate has dropped to 119 INR per month. This includes added benefits from Amazon shopping and Amazon music.
Lastly, Netflix comes with a greater brand value compared to the other two platforms. Regional content and low-cost plans have provided an impetus to its growth in India. Netflix India reportedly has a yearly turnover of 500 crore INR approx. This surpasses its global competitor Amazon Prime. Furthermore, Netflix India targets a viewership that surpasses the current 300 million subscribers to Hotstar.
The battle between streaming platforms is yet to turn more enthralling with the launch of AppleTV and a possible Disney+. In either way, this will turn out to be a boon for binge-watchers since they’ll get to enjoy beguiling content in larger numbers.
