Netflix finally brought a beautiful LGBT love story that sweeps right into your heart and stays with you for a long time. Half of it may look like an age-old love triangle but it is so much more than that and not what you might be expecting from it. Director, Alice Wu’s second feature film Half of it is a magical ride with perfectly woven characters and crisp editing.

scene from half of it

Ellie lives in a small town called Squahamish with her father who is still grieving for the loss of his wife who died years earlier. Ellie tries to talk to her father on many occasions but he was always aloof and silent. He has a job as a station master despite having a PHD in engineering from China. Therefore, Ellie decides to help her father by earning extra income from writing other student’s assignments. That is how she meets Paul, who requests her to write a love letter from his behalf. After initial disagreement, Ellie helps Paul in wooing Aster, the beautiful girl they both come to like. The story then takes a different angle with portraying every character realistically and magically the equation between three forms the core of the film with much confusion, heartbreaks on the way.

Film peeks into many sensitive issues like bullying, mixed –race and gay discrimination. Also, there are many references of our favorite movies throughout the movie and small details to add more meaning to the film is commendable.
