The Forgotten Army is a dramatized adaptation highlighting the chronicles of Indian National Army aka Azad Hind Fauj.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose constituted this army of Indian Nationalists in South East Asia during World War II. The battalion was divided into two parts including the All-Women Rani Jhansi Regiment. The purpose of the Indian National Army was to clinch independence for the nation from the hands of the British.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was a visionary. He dreamt of a self-reliant army troop for India when he found Indian nationals serving The British Army. The British officials forced young Indian men to fight World War II on behalf of them. However, in return, the soldiers were scorned, looked down upon and ill-treated. Netaji thus formed an alliance with Imperial Japan to free the Indian soldiers of the British Army. Further, he constituted them into one united regiment serving the purpose of freedom. However, the Azad Hind Fauj was mostly misunderstood and declared ‘traitors’ to their own country.
Kabir Khan’s most ambitious project.
Kabir Khan, in an interview, mentioned how he aspired to give a concrete shape to this project for 20 years. In the series, Sunny Kaushal plays Captain Surinder Sodi, a young gun and a former soldier at the British Indian Army. Netaji’s far-sighted ideas of freedom inspire Sodhi and he joins the Azad Hind Fauj. Mohit Raina plays an older Sodhi who narrates his experiences to his grandson.
Similarly, Sharvari plays Maya Srinivasan, an Indian photographer born and brought up in Singapore. Maya never visited India but was deeply in awe of it after hearing stories from her grandmother about its rich heritage. Hence, she accompanies Sodhi and all other Bravehearts and joins the Rani Jhansi Regiment in the quest for freedom. The Indian National Army had plenty of soldiers like Maya who weren’t Indian citizens. However, they selflessly fought for their motherland and did not hesitate to lay down their lives.
The series is highly intriguing and presents a heart-wrenching account of the Indian National Army. In spite of serving the same purpose as most Indian freedom fighters, the Azad Hind Fauj received a cold-shoulder at their own nation. They faced imprisonment and deportation to Pakistan post Independence. Rest never received reelection to the Indian Army.
The series effectively lay down the poignant tale of the actual ‘Forgotten Army’ and their contributions. Further, stunning visuals, beguiling concept and power-packed performances make it a must-watch in our list.
