A whole lot of movies come out every year. There is more variety in entertainment now than it was a few years ago. But this has created a slight conflict of interest. The movies that you can watch with the whole family, especially the ones where you don’t need your children to cover their eyes and ears in particular scenes, are a bit scarce now. Family movies are also of various kinds. There are your typical family films that are all about good-vibe, and family celebrations.

Then there are the mindless action kind of films that you can enjoy without worrying about who was the killer. And there are films that are romantic and hopeful that you like watching with your loved ones. In this list, we will try to mix all kinds of family films.

  1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

This is the second installment of the ‘Indiana Jones franchise’, the famous archaeologist returns to continue on his adventures of finding mythical and exotic treasures. This film also gives a backstory to Indy showing how he got a taste for wearing the fedoras that became his signature and why he is so afraid of the snakes. In the year 1938, Indy is approached by a man who tells him that his father has gone missing and that he was looking for the Holy Grail. Indy and the man follow the clues and the breadcrumbs left by the old man to make a discovery that will change the world as they know it.

  1. Coco (2017)

‘Coco’ tells the adventurous tale of Miguel, an aspiring musician, who gets accidentally teleported to the Land of the Dead after trying to play with the ancient guitar of his great-great-grandfather. The Land of the Dead is a tricky place, for whoever goes there as a spirit can come back to the Land of the Living only as a spirit, but with a blessing from someone. That is, one must remember Miguel at the land of the living with his memory or a photograph. Miguel then has to meet his great-great-grandfather in the land of the dead, while facing many obstacles before he could find his way back to the land of the living. One of the most definitive movie-watching experiences ever, ‘Coco’ is often regarded as one of the greatest ventures of Pixar Animation Studios. Kudos!

  1. Milo (2012)

This film tells the story of a 10-year-old boy named Milo who lives with his father. He feels constrained in his life and wishes to be able to make more friends. Even when his father rejects his plea, Milo sneaks away to attend a school camp. But on the way back, he gets lost. A couple picks him along the way and Milo enjoys his new freedom. But, when he becomes aware of his skin disease that needs to be taken care of, he realizes why his father had held him back for so long.

  1. The Iron Giant (1999)

This film tells the uplifting story of Hogarth and his newfound friend, an alien giant robot, later dubbed as The Iron Giant. The movie begins with the launch of Sputnik when the giant robot falls from space and befriends the boy. Agent Kent Mansley is determined to investigate the anomaly by questioning Hogarth and finding more about the Iron Giant. As the movie progresses, the giant cannot help but leave his footprint everywhere he goes. Often equated with the likes of ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial’, ‘The Iron Giant’ is an immortal classic and a defining movie of the sub-genre, which rides high on emotions, thrill and relationships alike.

  1. Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Kung Fu Panda” is an animated comedy about a lazy panda, Po, who must somehow become a Kung Fu Master in order to save the Valley of Peace from a villainous snow leopard, Tai Lung. Set in the mythical world of ancient China, Po is an unlikely hero, who enters the rigid world of Kung Fu and turns it upside down. Dreamworks Animation managed to create a story that will keep kids glued to the screen. It is about the power of believing in yourself and following your dreams. The animation is wonderful as well as the music. “Kung Fu Panda” is one of those movies that adults and kids will love and cherish.

  1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind. This film is a perfect sequel for its earlier predecessor.

  1. A Bear Named Winnie (2004)

This film is set in the time of the First World War and is built around the story that inspired the famous writer A.A Milne in creating the story and the characters of ‘Winnie the Pooh’. It follows the character of Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, played by Michael Fassbender. He is a war veteran who has a way with animals. On his way to the town of Winnipeg, he saves a bear cub from a hunter. With nowhere else to take it, Harry decides to take the baby bear to his regiment. It doesn’t take time for Harry to form a bond with the bear, but soon, the bear’s presence affects the war-afflicted soldiers.

  1. Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Disney’s animated classic takes on a new form, with a widened mythology and an amazing cast. This is one of the most loved romantic stories of all time; one that we grew up watching and re-watching. In this adaptation, the audience gets to see a deeper story, especially about the Beast. While giving more depth to the story, the cast and crew created a beautiful, moving film that is definitely worth watching. It tells the story of Belle, a village lass who has her father kidnapped by a beast and must rescue him. While she’s at it, she falls for the beast and his mysterious ways and sets herself on a quest to free him and his servants from the ancient curse.

  1. National Treasure (2004)

If you are looking for something different, try “National Treasure”. In this film, Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) descends from a family of treasure-hunters who has been obsessed with finding a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers after the Revolutionary War. Now that he has some clues about its whereabouts, he must race to find it before a team of mercenaries does. If you are into fast-paced adventure movies with epic stories and good performances, “National Treasure” is the film to watch. Although it will be appreciated by older audiences, it is still a great movie to watch during a Sunday with the whole family movie.

  1. Incredibles 2 (2018)

‘Incredibles 2’  premiered in June 2018 and it is a sequel to ‘Incredibles’ which was widely successful after its release. The three need to tackle the day-to-day heroics of a normal life. And even in this installment, the family still does not know of baby Jack’s emerging superpowers. Now, with a new villain in the picture, the family, along with Frozone, must join hands to foil his evil plans.
