Throwback to the time when life was so simple. Sitting as a family and watching our favorite series on Doordarshan.  Ah! The good old days. It is time to take a trip down memory lane. Here is a list of the greatest shows that was telecasted on Doordarshan:

 1. Hum Log (1984)

Starring: Vinod Nagpal, Jayshri Arora, Rajesh Puri, Abhinav Chaturvedi, Seema Bhargava, Divya Seth, Sushma Seth

Hum Log was the first television series in India. At this time, Doordarshan was the only television channel that existed. It took inspiration from a Mexican series called Ven Conmigo. Hum Log depicted the life of an Indian middle-class family.

2. Ramayana (1987)


Written and directed by Ramanand Sagar

Starring:  Arun Govil, Deepika Chikhalia, Sunil Lahri, Arvind Trivedi, Dara Singh, Padma Khanna

As the name suggests, this show was based on the Hindu epic of the same name. The viewership was very high when it was released. Recently, Ramayana aired on television again. It broke of Games Of Thrones’ record for being one of the most-watched TV series in the world. Woah!

3. Mahabharat (1988)

Directed by B.R.Chopra, Ravi Chopra

Starring: Nitish Bhardwaj, Mukesh Khanna, Gajendra Chauhan, Praveen Kumar, Arjun, Roopa Ganguly, Puneet Issar, Pankaj Dheer, Gufi Paintal

Based on another epic, Mahabharat followed Ramayana and became the second-biggest series.

4. Byomkesh Bakshi (1993)

Directed by Basu Chatterjee

Starring: Rajit Kapur, K.K. Raina, Sukanya Kulkarni

Byomkesh Bakshi was based on a novel written by Sharadindu Bandhopadhyay.

Bakshi is a Bengali detective who solves thrilling cases with his friend and partner, Ajitkumar Bannerjee.

5. Malgudi Days (1986)

Starring: Master Manjunath, Girish Karnad, Vaishali Kasaravalli and many more.

Malgudi Days was based on R.K. Narayan’s famous works. It portrays the life of the people who live in a small village named Malgudi. The famous cartoonist, R.K.Laxman, was the sketch artist of the series.

6. Fauji (1989)

Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Rakesh Sharma, Vikram Chopra

Fauji shows the life of soldiers at a training camp. It marked the debut of one of the greatest actors in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan.

7. Chitrahaar (1982)


This weekly show telecasted music videos of famous Bollywood songs. All Bollywood fans, especially the youth looked forward to Chitrahaar.

8. Shaktimaan (1997)


Written by Ghalib Asad Bhopali, Brijmohan Pandey

Directed by Dinker Jani

Starring: Mukesh Khanna, Vaishnavi Mahant, Kitu Gidwani, Surendra Pai, Tom Alter, Lalit Parimoo, Kishwer Merchant, Zahida Parveen

This action-comedy gave us an iconic Hindi superhero. Shaktimaan lives life as a normal human being as well as a superhuman. It was the longest-running children series on Doordarshan.

9. Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993)

Starring: Sushma Seth, Navin Nischol, Shekhar Suman, Farida Jalal, Bhavana Balsavar, Vishal Singh, Nattasha Singh, Urvashi Dholakia, Amar Upadhyay, Deven Bhojani, Sunny Singh

Dekh Bhai Dekh showed the lives of individuals who lived in a joint family in the big city of Mumbai. Also, it was produced by Bollywood star, Jaya Bachchan.

10. Vikram aur Betaal (1988)

Starring: Arun Govil, Sajjan

You all must have heard of the latest Netflix series, Betaal. But do you remember Vikram Aur Betaal that aired on Doordarshan.

This fantasy contained Indian mythological stories about a king and a ghost. We’re well aware that we have missed some shows but they will be stuck with us forever. They serve as a reminder of the simple yet entertaining days. Did you get nostalgic after reading this?
