This 2018 fantasy horror movie is directed by Anil Barve and stars newcomer Sohum Shah as the lead. The movie revolves around the consequences humans face when they build a temple for the evil offspring of a Goddess. Screening of the movie held at several International Film Festivals. Further, a major part of cinema enthusiasts is also of the opinion of Tumbadd being a worthier bet for India at the Oscars over Gully Boy. One can stream this movie on Amazon Prime Video.

This Vivek Agnihotri directorial was another choice of several critics for India’s entry at Oscars. The Tashkent Files revolved around conspiracy theories revolving around the death of India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Consequently, assassination and murder are few of the suspicions behind his mysterious demise. The movie is available on YouTube.

Laila Majnu (2018)

Coming to the genre of romance, this timeless saga deserved more recognition than it did. This Sajid Ali directorial was based on the tragic love story of Laila and Majnu. Imtiaz Ali penned down the modern adaptation of the popular folklore. Further, Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri gave lives to the starcrossed lovers on screen. Both had an impeccable screen presence and displayed a lot of finesse in their skill. Hence, it was sad to see such a classic getting overlooked by the selection committees of award shows. Shoojit Sircar‘s October starred Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu in the lead. In a personal opinion, this was Varun Dhawan’s best performance to date. The plot revolves around the lives of a group of interns and how an accident drastically affects them. Movie aficionados highly praised both Dhawan and Sandhu for their portrayal of Dan and Shiuli respectively. The movie is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Nandita Das‘s Manto starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the renowned Urdu poet, Saadat Hasan Manto. The movie holds various accounts of his life. In spite of a terrific performance by Siddiqui, the movie tanked at Box Office. However, it received a nomination at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and also won Siddiqui an award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. One can stream Manto on Netflix.

Another underrated work of Anurag Kashyap. Mukkabaaz revolves around Shravan (Vineet Kumar) who struggles to make his mark in Boxing while he falls for the sister of his biggest rival. The movie stars popular faces like Jimmy Shergill and Ravi Kishan. Jio and Airtel users can stream it exclusively on JioCinema and AirtelTV. Akash Khurana directed this road film starring Irrfan Khan before his sabbatical owing to prolonged illness. The movie also marked the Bollywood debut of actor Dulquer Salman. Mithila Palkar played the third lead in the movie. The movie shows a bittersweet road trip between individuals from different walks of life who get interlinked through an unfortunate mix up. Before the release of Bala and Ujda Chaman, there was a movie that highlighted the issue of premature balding. Under Qasim Khallow‘s direction, Shweta Tripathi played the role of Enakshi, a girl who suffers premature balding since her schooldays. Ajay Bahl‘s movie is set against the backdrop of a courtroom debate. The movie starring Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chaddha is based on a case of rape accusation where a Barrister and his junior fight on opposite sides. In spite of receiving positive reviews from critics, the movie couldn’t prosper at Box Office. This drama is available on Amazon Prime.

The Sky Is Pink

Lastly, we have Priyanka Chopra’s comeback movie The Sky is Pink. Directed by Shonali Bose, the movie retells the real-life experiences of Aisha Chaudhary (played by Zaira Wasim) who was born with a rare deficiency. The movie also stars Farhan Akhtar and Rohit Saraf alongside Chopra and Wasim. Subsequently, the movie premiered at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival. The heartfelt movie where a girl narrates accounts of her family posthumously is a must watch and is available on Netflix.
